About the Book:

GUARDIANS INC.: THE CYPHER is two stories in one. A glimpse into a multinational company that is in reality the oldest of secret societies, one that spans close to seven thousand years of existence, weaving in and out of history, guiding and protecting humanity from creatures and forces that most of us believe are only mythology and fairy tales.

The other is the story of Thomas Byrne, a young man thrust into secrets he shouldn’t be aware of and dangers he shouldn’t face but, that he ultimately will, for he is a Cypher. The only one who can steer humanity’s future.

The ultimate conspiracy theory is that Magic is real. Kept in check by technology but, every five hundred years the balance can shift and, if it does, technology will fail and those creatures we’ve driven into myth will come back with a vengeance.

To protect the present, Guardians Incorporated needs to know the future, and to unlock the future they need a Cypher.
This is the first book of the Guardians Inc Series.

For More Information

Thanks for joining us at the book club, Julian.  What made you want to jump into the YA fantasy genre?

The freedom it gives me to just explore the different elements and characters that can be in a story. We can have Magic, fantastic animals and throw in Sci-fi. Actually Guardians Inc. is a mix of Fantasy and Sci-fi and explores the relationship that can exist between the two genres.

Your book, Guardians Inc: The Cypher is actually two stories in one.  Can you tell us a little about each one and how it ties the whole book together?

One is the story of a secret society that has existed for almost seven thousand years and that is charged with keeping the balance of Magic and Technology tilted in Humanity’s favor and the other is the story of Thomas Byrne, a 15 year old that will become the Cypher Guardians Inc. needs to decode the future and keep humanity safe.

What exactly is a cypher?

It is a person that has the ability to read any language and decode anything he can read. Thomas believes this to be a lame power, but through the story he will find out just how incredibly powerful being able to access all knowledge is.

All books have a “pivotal” point in their book where the reader just can’t put it down.  Can you give us one of your pivotal points?

I’ve heard many times that readers fall in love with the Library at Pervagus Mansion, a near infinite depository of everything written since the 3rd century, all those “Lost” books, all those books that were never published, lost ideas and dreams, even your notes and texts are stored somewhere inside.

How many books are in the series and can you name them for us?

I planned the Guardians Inc. Series to have five books from the very original outline, but as it has expanded during the story it might be necessary a 6th book. I still don’t know, although the series finale is already written and I’m catching up to it.
Book one is The Cypher
Two is Thundersword
Three The Four Legged Prophet
Four The Lost Columns.
Five and Six don’t have a determined title yet.

Lots of authors have gone the self-publishing route.  What was the deciding factor for you?

It was the route I took from the beginning! A good friend of mine, Francisco Trueba, was whom actually gave me the push to publish. He designed the website and helped me create the ebooks.

I’m now thinking that maybe Guardians Inc. needs a publishing house because of the Middle grade audience and rach, so I’m beginning to look for one, although with three books and a fourth underway I may be too late.

 I guess we’ll see…

What’s next for you, Julian?

Continue writing the Next Guardians Inc. and other projects that I have already begun with Francisco, some of them in my native Spanish.
