About the Book:
That being said, your primary objective in life should be to know who you are so that you can position yourself to succeed in offices aligned with your purpose. After all, your purpose is the collective reasoning behind your existence. As one philosopher puts it, “Purpose is the only real reason you are here, for you exist because your purpose exists. Thus apart from purpose, you have no authentic motivation for living. You may very well exist, but when you’re gone, very few will ever know that you were here.”
Now for some of us discovering our purpose is simple. We understood it long before we ever became adults. For others it is not so easy, and for more reasons than I can gather. This is why the process of personal discovery is so critical; for not only does it allow you to discover your purpose. It also positions you to persistently follow the evolution of your purpose.
This is important because we are all changing every day. Consequently, our purpose will also change contingent to the season of life we are in. Still, in spite of this inevitable change and all the complexities which make understanding your purpose difficult, you will always be able to detect your purpose simply because it is the source of your fulfillment. So if you’re in a job, relationship, or any office which is persistently unfulfilling, odds are it is not aligned with your purpose – and unless you are willing to concede the awesome measures of fulfillment you would experience otherwise, you need to start thinking about making a change so that you can both enhance your life and have profound impacts in the various groups and societies you are in.
“Unlocking the Mystery of You” champions this cause focusing first and foremost on purpose and the crucial role it plays in achieving personal fulfillment and setting the stage for the individual to be a catalyst for group fulfillment. It accomplishes this goal by utilizing a purposeful roadmap designated as the Pinnacle of Purpose. The Pinnacle of Purpose is a progressive path illustrated by 7 ascending levels which, if followed sequentially, not only have the power to transform your life. It will provide you with the greatest measures of fulfillment and success life can offer. All you have to do is follow the crucial, yet simple order of purpose, beginning with confidence and concluding with peace.
So if you’re ready for a change; if you’re ready to stop sleeping on your dreams and your truest passions; if you’re tired of the status quo and living a life which feels incomplete; if you’re tired of wishing your life was better and are now prepared to do something about it; if you’re finally ready to take that ever-difficult leap of faith, then this is a book you must read. Because in this book I show you how to take that leap of faith without falling, for when you leap towards your purpose, you will always land squarely on your feet.
This is true first and foremost because your purpose is what makes you unique to every other individual in the world today, a premise which thoroughly validates the existence of every man and women on the earth. The problem is that many don’t understand their purpose. Once upon a time I didn’t either. That is until I got serious about life. It was then that I realized what purpose is.
It is the collection of all your authentic desires; it is your passion. It is your North Star and your direction; it is your life-long teacher – and above all else, it is that which causes you to press through any form or measure of adversity until you unleash your maximum potential, for it gives you the strength to hold on when you have no strength left within you to hold on.

Thanks for visiting us at the book club, D.L. Can we begin by having you tell us how you got started helping others live a better life? Where was your humblest beginning?
D.L.: Believe it or not I got started in my corporate career. As a director, program manager, and project management professional, I have spent the vast majority of my career managing people. In the process of becoming a more effective and successful manager, I began to care more and more about my employees and team members beyond their work because our personal lives impact on our professional careers. This inspired me to become a career/life coach. This allows me to have a more profound impact in the lives of my clients by helping them effectively align their personal lives and careers to minimize/manage the unavoidable conflicts between them, and ultimately lead more fulfilling and successful lives. Accordingly, the books I write and the programs I run are simply platforms and outlets for me to have a positive impact on as many lives as possible.
My humblest beginning was the beginning, when I transitioned from full-time employment to consultation and coaching so that I would have the time to construct my platform. At the same time, I had a family (i.e. a wife with 4 kids); so we are talking about a huge leap of faith here. To this day I am thankful I had a supportive wife. It made the difficult decision to pursue my purpose and my dream easier because she was behind me all the way and was actually more confident in me than I was in myself.
You make a great point in your book – that purpose is the main reason you are here. How can people realize that this is the main thing they are put on this earth for?
D.L.: I address this question in my book by simply asking my readers to ask themselves 10 distinct questions. These questions strategically initiate an authentic process of personal discovery and will ultimately reveal to them their purpose.
As far as application goes, you will clearly notice that you are in your purpose because your work is consistently fulfilling. In other words, at the end of a hard day of work, you don’t complain about being tired or how much you dislike some avenue of your job of your life. Not at all; when you are living your life with purpose, you almost have to be pulled from your work because you enjoy it so much. Accordingly, enjoying yourself is not an issue no matter how hard you work. The main issue ends up being balance and ensuring you’re not overdoing it because it’s hard to slow down when you’re experiencing the levels of fulfillment which derive from living your life with purpose. Trust me; I know from experience.
What would you say is the first step toward unlocking the ‘mystery of you’?
D.L.: The first step is confidence. In essence, you must first have confidence in yourself that you have the ability to fulfill your purpose in spite of any concerns, fears, or matters beyond your control. It’s a very straightforward step simply because your purpose corresponds to your strengths and is aligned with various life offices which you were naturally designed to be good at. So the deck is already stacked in your favor.
The problem often ends up being those external factors which cause us to worry if taking a step in favor of our purpose is safe or “the thing to do.” I know because that’s exactly where I was a few years ago. However, I realized that the fulfillment, joy, and peace I’d be missing out on by not going after my purpose was infinitely greater than the risk involved in taking the proverbial leap of faith. So I took a leap, and that 1 crucial decision in my life has made all the difference.
Can you give us a pep talk about what to do when we realize our purpose?
D.L.: Certainly. I’ll do so simply by following the order of the Pinnacle of Purpose, which is the model I use to illustrate the beginning of the path which leads to fulfillment.
Now we realize our purpose at the level of knowledge, which is the 2nd level of the Pinnacle of Purpose following confidence. After we gain the knowledge of our purpose and create a plan for fulfilling it, we must dedicate ourselves to displaying good judgment by making decisions which will keep us on the path which will allow us to fulfill our purpose. This corresponds to the 3rd level of the Pinnacle of Purpose (i.e. judgment).
Next we have to develop sound work ethic (i.e. the 4th level) by not only working hard in each of our life offices; we have to also make sure we are dedicating a healthy amount of time to each one such that they all remain progressive.
Next we have to achieve a strong sense of focus (i.e. the 5th level) and not allow ourselves to be distracted by all those things which have the power to pull us off our path and back to an unfulfilling life.
Then we have to master the age-old principle of patience (i.e. the 6th level). This is because finding an office in which we can fulfill our purpose does not transpire overnight. Therefore, we must be patient and be willing to wait until an opportunity presents itself.
Finally we have to have peace (i.e. the 7th level of the Pinnacle of Purpose) by being content with the manifestation of our purpose in spite of how celebrated or glamourous it may be in an oft backwards society.
I’ve always thought that leaving legacies behind helps others realize our purpose. What ways can we do that?
D.L.: I agree. The way we can leave a legacy is by simply staying true to ourselves and resisting the temptation to try to “fit in with the crowd.” See the crowd is a group of individuals who lack purpose and are desperately trying to fit in some socially acceptable mold which makes them feel safe and/or accepted. Therefore, if you want to leave a legacy behind you when you’re gone, you’re going to have to go against the social grain. After which you will find that your legacy is not limited to the derivatives of your life’s work and the enduring contribution it will have on future generations. Quite the contrary; your legacy also includes the strength of your will and character which allowed you to rise above the noise and the contention of the common ruck to accomplish so great a feat which so few have ever done.
What if our ‘purpose’ changes as we go through life? Should we concentrate more on new ‘purposes’ or not let go of our past purposes?
D.L.: The reality is that our purpose in life will change regularly as we pass from one life season to the next. So yes; we should always remain focused on our purpose as it pertains to the current life season we are in. As I often say, the most immediate thing we possess is “the here and now.”
Notwithstanding, this doesn’t mean we should let go of past purposes. For example, I once was a very talented musician who played for a choir and a band. However, as my family grew and I took on more responsibilities, I found myself without the time to dedicate to my music. So I’ve let go of this purpose for the time being. Yet I plan to one day, when I enter into a new life season, take this purpose back up; but not until I enter into a more appropriate season. The key, then, is that we have to be aware of the evolution of our purpose and be willing to embrace each corresponding life season.
Now’s your chance. What would you like to say to your readers and fans?
D.L.: Fulfillment can be yours. All you have to do is dedicate yourself to your purpose and resist the temptation to settle for anything less than your dreams.
I would also encourage you not to wait for what you may feel is some ideal time to start making the necessary changes in your life to begin living your life with purpose. Trust me; when it comes to fulfillment, the time is always now.
If you need convincing, I advise you to read my book “Unlocking the Mystery of You.” Besides revealing the path to fulfillment, this book also speaks to the urgency and critical nature of this message. Honestly I can not tell you how many people I’ve talked to who are lamenting even now over some of the choices they’ve made which have effectively closed the door on them ever living the life they were designed to lead. My question to you is – why should you go there? You have an opportunity right now to make a change in your life for the better. I implore you to make that change and promise you that your life will be all the better for it, and you will never be the same.
