Book Excerpt:

Chapter Five

The Diagnosis

After we returned home from Mackinac Island, I reluctantly made an appointment for the biopsy. I still did not think there was anything to be concerned about, because I felt too good. Sick people were the ones who had something wrong, I thought. I went to the hospital bright and early the next Monday morning, following my return home from vacation for a fine-needle biopsy in my neck. I was dragging my feet all the way to the hospital. I just couldn’t stand to hear any more bad news. As I was lying flat on my back on the table, the tears rolled down both sides of my face and dripped onto the examination table. I couldn’t explain it, but somewhere deep down inside, I sensed the worst. The doctor doing the biopsy told me that thyroid nodules are fairly common. Ninety-five percent of them are benign, leaving only five percent as malignant. That was reassuring to hear. While your medical history, examination by a physician, lab tests, and ultrasound are important, the only test that can distinguish whether thyroid nodules are benign or malignant is through a fine-needle biopsy. After numbing the area, the doctor sticks a very fine needle into the nodules to remove cells for microscopic examination, which are sent to pathology. A bandage is put on your neck, and you are sent home. The biopsy wasn’t too painful, but I would describe it as uncomfortable. Every day of the rest of that week seemed to be an eternity as I waited for that phone call with the biopsy results. Finally, the nurse called three days later. She hesitated for a few minutes on the other end of the line before she reluctantly said that it was urgent that I make an appointment as soon as possible. What more can I say except that it was a long weekend! Monday finally rolled around. I was in a daze as I walked into the doctor’s office early that morning. The doctor sat down in his chair and looked me straight in the eye with apprehension. If I didn’t know better, I would have sworn I saw a single tear in his eye when he gave me the news that I was dreading to hear with all my heart—that I had papillary thyroid cancer—but my eyes were so welled up with tears, I wasn’t sure, I was not prepared to hear those heart-wrenching words that would pierce my heart forever. They cut like a knife. It was the worst shock of my life, and I was completely numb inside. The true meaning of those words hadn’t sunk in yet. They were just too final. I came out of the doctor’s office and into the waiting room where my mom was waiting for me. I tried to smile, but it was forced. I wanted to act like everything was normal for as long as I could and put off telling her the news that had just turned my own world upside down. As we walked out of the hospital, my legs felt like lead. Each step became more impossible. Finally, when I fell into my car that was it. There was no holding back. I completely broke down. The tears started and went on for at least a week, almost nonstop. I remember eating my bowl of cereal that next morning before work and crying the entire time. I didn’t know my body was capable of producing so many tears. Finally, there were no more tears left to cry. But I still felt completely hopeless. Papillary thyroid cancer is a very treatable kind of cancer. The prognosis is usually good if it is caught in time, which it usually is, and receives the proper treatment. There are many more cases being diagnosed each year, mainly because technology is now so much more advanced. If mine hadn’t been diagnosed when it was, it would have probably become terminal. I was thankful that the outlook was encouraging, but I didn’t like hearing anyone pass it off as the good cancer. There is no good cancer. Cancer can kill. It may be slow, depending on what type it is and the stage it’s in, but left untreated, death is almost inevitable. The C word is one that nobody ever wants to hear. That very word meant death to me. If I was fortunate enough to survive, my life would be forever changed and would require lifelong monitoring.

Praise for Rejoicing Through The Tears:

By HCTexas on October 5, 2014

In her book, Rejoicing through the Tears: Embracing God's Hand in Cancer, Brenda George shares not only the story of her journey through surviving Thyroid cancer but also some practical information that could be very helpful for anyone faced with a cancer diagnosis. We know that God does not heal everyone as He did Brenda but what she shares in this book will give everyone the opportunity to know there is hope and there will be victory if you put your faith and strength in our Lord, Jesus.

Though at first glance this cover may look a bit whimsical (take a closer look) the content is anything but. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Everyone knows someone that has been affected by the diagnosis of cancer; if not you then a family member, friend or friend of a friend. Please read this book it can only help.

PUYB Virtual Book Club Presents The October Testament by Ruth Magnusson Davis

Inside the Book

Title: The October Testament
Author: Ruth Magnusson Davis
Publisher: Baruch House Publishing
Pages: 434
Genre: Christian / Bible / Religion & Spirituality

The primary author of the October Testament is the English martyr William Tyndale. This is his final New Testament translation of 1535. Two years later, his friend John Rogers first published these scriptures in a little-known but very important Reformation Bible called the Matthew Bible, which became the first authorized English Bible under King Henry VIII. A second edition was published in 1549, from which this update is made. Rogers was martyred in 1555, burned at the stake in Smithfield, England. The wine-colored cover, therefore, is symbolic of the blood with which this bible was bought. Ruth Magnusson Davis is founder and editor of the New Matthew Bible Project. Her work is to update the Matthew Bible: not to make a modern bible, but to keep the language of the original as much as possible, which she calls the real language of the faith. Because the KJV New Testament was largely taken from Tyndale, readers will find much that is familiar here, and beautiful, but will find it easier to understand than the KJV. Ruth, a retired lawyer, is a scholar of early modern English, the writings of William Tyndale, and the Matthew Bible. In 2009 she retired from professional practice in order to undertake this work full-time. In October 2015, she completed the New Testament, "The October Testament." Then she began work on the interior layout and attending to all the details of publishing. In March 2016 the October Testament finally became available for sale, and was immediately well received. Ruth's fine editorial hand is almost unnoticeable. Tyndale continues to shine through. Rogers' style in his annotations is distinctly his. Readers comment repeatedly on both the flow and the clarity of the New Matthew Bible scriptures, and also on the beauty of the original style, which Ruth, with her delicate touch, has masterfully retained.

Book Excerpt:

Chapter 3

The baptism, preaching, and office of John the Baptist, and how Christ was baptized by him in the Jordan.

In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the wilderness of Judea, 2saying, Repent: the kingdom of heaven is at hand! 3This is he of whom it is spoken by the prophet Isaiah, who says, The voice of a crier in wilderness: Prepare the Lord’s way, and make his paths straight.   4This John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a girdle of skin about his loins. His food was locusts and wild honey.a 5At that time Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan, went out to him, 6and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.  7When he saw many of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees come to his baptism, he said to them, O offspring of vipers, who has taught you to flee from the vengeance to come? 8Bring forth therefore the fruits belonging to repentance. 9And see that you ones do not think to say in yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10Even now is the axe put to the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. 11I baptize you in water in token of repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12He has also his fan in his hand, and will purge his floor, and gather the wheat into his garner, and will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.b  13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him. 14But John stopped him, saying, I ought to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15Jesus answered and said to him, Let it be so
Isa 40:3
Mk 1:1-17 Lu 3:1-22 Joh 1:15-34; 3:22-36.

Now, for thus it behoves us, to fulfil all righteousness. Then John let him. 16And Jesus, as soon as he was baptized, came straight out of the water. And lo, heaven was open over him, and John saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and light upon him. 17And lo, there came a voice from heaven, saying, This is he: my beloved Son, in whom is my delight.
Mk 1:11 Lu 3:22 Joh 1:32 2Pe 1:16-18
Locusts  (3:4)
Wheat and chaff (3:12)

The Notes

a) According to Pliny [Roman savant and author of Natural History in the first century], locusts are certain creatures that people of Parthia and Ethiopia used to eat. But some say the tops or buds of trees or fruits are meant. [Tyndale>John the Baptist came not to impress with his diet and strait living, which outward things pertain only to the taming of the flesh, but he came to preach, as the voice of a crier.] b) By the wheat and the chaff are understood the good and the evil.
Luke 3:17.

Ruth Magnusson Davis is a retired lawyer with an undergraduate degree in languages, and a conservative Christian. She holds to the fullness of Reformation doctrine, with one foot in the camp of evangelical traditional Anglicans and another with the Lutherans. She presently resides in Canada.

In 2005 Ruth formed her little company, Baruch House Publishing, to publish her first book, 'True to His Ways: Purity & Safety in Christian Spiritual Practice,' released that year.
In 2009 Ruth retired from law and founded the New Matthew Bible Project, dedicated to gently updating the Matthew Bible, a little-known Reformation Bible. The Matthew Bible was the joint work of 3 men early in the Reformation: William Tyndale, Miles Coverdale, and John Rogers. Few people realize that the Matthew Bible formed the basis of the King James Version. Ruth's goal is to maintain the historic language of the faith while making these old scriptures plain for today's reader. The updated version will be called the New Matthew Bible, or NMB for short.

Ruth completed her work on the NMB New Testament, and it was published in April 2016 as 'The October Testament.'

About the Book:

After President Woodrow Wilson suffered a paralyzing stroke in the fall of 1919, his wife, First Lady Edith Wilson, began to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of the Executive Office. Mrs. Wilson had had little formal education and had only been married to President Wilson for four years; yet, in the tenuous peace following the end of World War I, Mrs. Wilson dedicated herself to managing the
office of the President, reading all correspondence intended for her bedridden husband. Though her Oval Office authority was acknowledged in Washington, D.C. circles at the time--one senator called her "the Presidentress who had fulfilled the dream of suffragettes by changing her title from First Lady to Acting First Man"--her legacy as "First Woman President" is now largely forgotten.

William Hazelgrove's Madam President is a vivid, engaging portrait of the woman who became the acting President of the
United States in 1919, months before women officially won the right to vote. Movie Rights Optioned by Storyline Entertainment.

For More Information

  • Madam President: The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson is available at Amazon.
  • Pick up your copy at Barnes & Noble.
  • Discuss this book at PUYB Virtual Book Club at Goodreads.

Before you started writing your book, what kind of research did you do to prepare yourself?

First I had to read all the biographies I could get my hands on about Edith Wilson and Woodrow Wilson. Then I went to The Papers of Woodrow Wilson. This is where I found most of my information and I was able to put together the chronology of Edith Wilson running the White House for two years. I then read Edith Wilson memoir written in 1939 which gave her take on her role in the White House. Then I jumped off the cliff and began writing.

Did you pursue publishers or did you opt to self-pub?

My agent shopped it to several publishers and Regnery snapped it up on a two book deal.

If self-published, did you hire someone to format the ebook version for you or did you do it yourself?  Can you tell us what that was like?

I always used traditional publishers

If published by a publisher, what was your deciding factor in going with them?

They offered to get behind the book and they are very strong in media promotion. Also their editing has been superb.

If published by a publisher, are you happy with the price they chose?

Whatever price they choose I am happy with. With a book like Madam President The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson  the readers are used to paying hardcover prices for non fiction.

Did you purposefully choose a distinct month to release your book?  Why?

Yes I did. Because of the subject matter of the first woman president I wanted it to coincide with the election. So the book is coming out in October which is really perfect as we might just elect a woman president. Little do people know the first woman president reigned almost a hundred years before.

How did you choose your cover?

I didn’t the publisher did but I think the photograph shows the relationship between Wilson and Edith. They were very modern in their working relationship.

Did you write your book, then revise or revise as you went?

I always finish a first draft and then go back. You want to get it all down first and then go back and begin all the welding, rewriting, molding, chiseling that is required to turn something from a block of wood into a book.

Did you come up with special swag for your book and how are you using it to help get the word out about your book?

I have not but I should come up with some swag. I am swag deficient.

Did you consider making or hiring someone to make a book trailer for your book?

If so, what’s the link?

I have not as of yet but I am working on it. Here is a link to Edith Wilson’s story on Youtube

What’s your opinion on giving your book away to sell other copies of your book?

Because it is a hardcover I can only give away the pdf. But yes I agree with the concept. I have given away hundreds of  my other books.

What are three of the most important things you believe an author should do before their book is released?

Social Media. Blog. Facebook. Twitter
Set up as many speaking engagements as you can.
Go see your local bookstores and libraries.

What are three of the most important things you believe an author should do after their book is released?

Media as much as you can.
Keep up the social media.
Use book subscription sites
Do book signings where you can.

What kind of pre-promotion did you do before the book came out?

My book isn’t out but I do facebook ads, blog, twitter, subscription sites, google adwords, facebook marketing.

Do you have a long term plan with your book?

Just do as much media as long as I can.

What would you like to say to your readers and fans about your book?

We are at a very interesting point in our national history. The First Woman President is a possibility. Madam President The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson gives us insight as to how we got here and it is an amazing story of one woman’s grit and determination when all was against her.

PUYB Chats with Gary Schwendiman, author of 'The Future of Clean Energy'

In his groundbreaking new book, The Future of Clean Energy, Dr. Gary Schwendiman details the startling truths he uncovered during ten years of research in clean energy. Most popular beliefs about the future of clean energy are simply wrong, and most governments waste billions of dollars on the wrong green initiatives. Written for the casual reader, Schwendiman’s book presents the facts in an accessible, compelling, and—most importantly—entertaining way.

Dr. Schwendiman cofounded one of the first private equity firms in the United States to invest exclusively in clean energy. He has given presentations on clean energy topics in 26 states and 10 foreign countries. Prior to that, he dedicated much of his long career to studying, working, and contributing to energy and fuel production.

This vast experience led Schwendiman to uncover the truths about which clean energy technologies will win and which technologies will lose as the world goes green. These truths will be shocking to most people, making The Future of Clean Energy a must-read for everyone from political leaders to energy executives to casual readers with an interest in how we’re going to solve some of the world’s most difficult environmental and economic problems. Schwendiman is the father of five children and grandfather of 14. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.

How did you get involved in clean energy?

I was Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  I was also Co-Chairman of the Graduate Agribusiness Program.
In both of those positions, I was deeply involved in the beginnings of the ethanol industry in Nebraska. Ethanol is made in the US from corn, and Nebraska is one of the leading producers of corn, so there was great interest in ethanol as a clean fuel.

In 2004, the first fully computerized ethanol plant was constructed North Dakota.  Due to the computerization and automation, the price to produce ethanol dropped significantly. A business partner and I saw an opportunity to invest in these new ethanol plants and started an investment firm to do so. I was director of research for the firm and began doing research on other ways of producing clean energy. As I compiled the research, I had the idea to write what I had discovered and concluded about the future of clean energy. On December 31, 2015, my book, The Future of Clean Energy, was published. It covers the full range of clean energy, including electricity (nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, and water)  and fuel, (gasoline, biodiesel, and ethanol), as well as current energy producers that are not clean (coal and natural gas).

Global warming is a serious issue and one that can’t be ignored.  Do you think that global warming is more of an issue today than ever and what should the politicians running for election be saying about global warming in your opinion?

Global warming has gradually grown to become one of the most important world issues over the past 15 or so years. The discussion about it starts with this question:  Is the global warming that is occurring due to a natural cycle caused by the changing positions of the sun and the earth as they rotate? Or is it a result of human-created greenhouse gases that are warming our atmosphere?

Looking at the historical record with regard to the glacial and interglacial cycles that occur over thousands of years, the earth is now in an interglacial stage, which means that the glaciers are slowly receding. On the human-caused side, the measurement of human-caused greenhouse gas in the atmosphere has increased substantially since humans started to burn coal and engage in other activities that increase global warming.

While there is no consensus on how rapidly the temperature will change, the ice will melt, sea levels will rise, and plants and animals will be impacted, it seems wise to conclude that human activity is contributing to global warming. Therefore, governments should implement certain changes which reduce the production of greenhouse gas.

What else should politicians say? That burning coal, natural gas, and oil produces a majority of the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. The world would be wise to gradually reduce its use of coal, natural gas, and oil. Practically speaking, coal and natural gas should be gradually phased out and replaced with large, safe, efficient nuclear reactors, as well as nuclear energy innovations such as small modular reactors and mini reactors to supply. Anyone reviewing these small and mini reactors in detail will see that they are safe, efficient, buried underground, and create little waste. They are the ideal way to produce the massive amounts of electricity needed in the world. Wind and solar can be contributors on a very small scale for individual homes, businesses, or small towns, but it takes 270 square miles of wind towers spread over various areas for wind maximization and 44 square miles of solar panels spread over large areas with different sunlight patterns to equal the amount of electricity produced by one large nuclear power reactor.

What do you believe that citizens can do to protect our environment?

There are two parts of the environment to protect. The first is the earth’s environment, including air, water, land, plants, and animals, which should be protected from particulate and chemical pollution. The other part of the environment is the atmosphere that surrounds the earth, which can be polluted by greenhouse gases or other chemicals released from earth.

What can citizens do? The changes to protect the environment will be driven by scientific evidence to show the need for protecting the environment, then public awareness and support of that evidence to be implemented by government policies and laws. Citizens can support local, state, and national legislation and laws that are designed to keep all parts of the environment clean, healthy, and free of pollution.

On an individual level, citizens can reduce the amount of waste and pollution they personally create, drive smaller cars, and use solar panels to create small amounts of electricity for houses and wind to create smaller amounts of energy where feasible. It’s also important for citizen to push for the development and implementation of clean energy-producing large, small, and mini nuclear reactors to replace carbon-based creation of electricity.

What do you believe is the most serious issue concerning our environment?

The most serious issue is the burning of carbon-based material and fuel that generates greenhouse gases and creates particulate pollution of the air and water. For the developed world, the problem is the use of carbon-based material to create electricity and carbon-based fuel for transportation. For the undeveloped world, it is that three billion people use wood and coal to cook their food and heat their homes. Burning these carbon-based materials produces greenhouse gases and particulate matter that pollutes the air, land, and water.

By 2050, the world population may increase by as much as three billion people. It
is estimated that 90% of these people will be born in Asia and Africa. Unless a way is found to provide electricity without using carbon-based materials, the growing population will use coal, natural gas, and oil, and further pollute the environment and produce greenhouse gases. The only way to provide the electricity that will allow these populations to maintain a lifestyle that enables them to even care about the environment is to build nonpolluting ways of producing electricity. The only hope for producing massive amounts of clean electricity is to build large, small, and mini nuclear reactors supplemented by wind and solar and water power where feasible. To be fully implemented, such a change would require approximately 50 or more years with massive aid to undeveloped areas of the world.

It is also unlikely that any significant progress toward a goal of having clean electricity for the masses will be made until birth control is made available and used in overpopulated areas. What is desperately needed is a way to effectively incentivize the use of birth control.

Birth control implementation, if accomplished, along with a change from using coal, natural gas, and oil to nuclear power, wind, and solar would be the most effective way to protect the global environment and produce less greenhouse gas.

How can your book help us see the light?

In many books on energy, a casual reader is overwhelmed by new words and definitions which attempt to bring a reader’s vocabulary to the level of the scientist who wrote the book. The knowledge is there, but the casual reader can’t understand it. So, a reader often ends up confused and takes a “walk in the dark.”

I do just the opposite. I take the difficult-to-understand scientific knowledge and explain it using words the reader already knows and understands. The book is not meant for experts or even highly knowledgeable people in energy or clean energy. It is meant for a casual reader who wants to understand in a creative, entertaining, and easy way how to judge which is the best clean energy.

Rather than having people read, memorize, and then forget a jumble of facts, the book explains several easy ways to evaluate any energy source, whether its purpose is to make electricity or provide transportation fuel. To make the concepts of the book easily understandable, each energy source is pictured as a football team that competes on all of the attributes of clean energy to see which team is superior.

The various teams are then judged on how well they play. That is, how well they accomplish the goal of producing clean energy. After reading the book, rather than trying to remember lots of unrelated details, readers have a model they can use to do an evaluation themselves. They don’t only see the light when they are reading the book, but they carry the light with them to easily explain to others how to evaluate whether one energy source is cleaner, more effective, and more efficient than another.
